The Studio Daily is a side project that we started at the beginning of the year. We started it as an Instagram to invite studio owners to share their spaces with others from around the world. It is now evolving into much more as a result of the current times, The intention was to provide inspiration to engineers to build their own spaces. Gary was inspired by others to create his own studio to be a hobby space to be used in our off-time. The goal was for him to be able to have space where he could go to fine-tune his skills as an audio engineer. Little did we know at the time that our off-time was going to be a lot longer than we anticipated. I guess we completed our new work zones just in the nick of time. With our extended “off-season” He has been working on expanding this studio. This has included changing from the intended purpose of it being a mix studio to adding the ability to become a content creation space.
From Live to the Studio
It goes without saying that we meet many artists and their crew members from around the world. While we generally don’t interact with the artists, we spend a good amount of time with their crew members. On a typical day, we get little opportunity to visit and engage in small talk such as over a meal. While the chats are generally short, we have enough time to learn that everybody has a story to share.
The live event industry is full of so many passionate individuals. The people that work in the industry are there because they love what they do. With the long days and varying work conditions such as high heat and occasional unfavorable working terrain, passion is a must. It is definitely not a career for the weak at heart, but once it gets in your blood it is pretty much there to stay.
Collaboration Time
Many in the industry have taken to collaborating on podcasts and videos. They are sharing their stories, projects, and how-to videos. When it comes to touring engineers, we get to see some of these people multiple times with varying artists. Frequently new friendships are formed and contact information is exchanged. Gary has taken the opportunity to reach out to not only our local people but industry professionals across the country. First and foremost we want to see the industry and our friends in it to make it to the other side of this crazy season. In addition, he has started collaborating with various industry professionals for his youtube channel as well as created his “Life of Sound Podcasts” on Soundcloud. It has been amazing to see how everyone has come together supporting each other during these trying times.
Finding New Ways To Entertain You
While we are longing for the 16 hour days in the heat trying to stay hydrated. (Yes, we are a sick bunch of individuals. Its all part of being passionate.) That is just not in the cards for us for now. The crews and artists are still finding ways to entertain not only themselves but the fans as well. They have taken to YouTube, Facebook Live, and Twitch to name a few to provide content in the absence of live events.
Please Support the Efforts
The Studio Daily which was intended to be photo inspiration has transformed to add a youtube channel, The Studio Daily-Life of Sound. The hobby studio is now a space where content is either gathered or edited daily. This has become a great way to pass the unexpected time off, in addition to adding positive viewing content in times where it is much needed. Over the last few weeks, Gary has been occupying his time interviewing many live sound engineers as well as other industry professionals. The first series of interviews has been covering how these professionals got their start in the industry. Please support his efforts by checking out these interviews. There may even be an engineer from one of your favorite bands coming up soon. Check out the most recent interview with Pooch, a seasoned audio engineer for several known rock bands. To hear about his resume, you will have to take a listen. Pooch shares a great story about how he came up in the industry to where he is today. Check it out today, you’ll be glad you did.
